Jean Wilcox Hibben: Shaking the Myth:  Proving/Disproving Family Legends – Jean demonstrated the use of the A*R*G (Acceptability, Relevance and Grounds) method of analyzing arguments.  Funny and articulate, Jean is a wonderful speaker.

Genealogy Nugget: A legend or story that has been passed down through the family is not necessarily true.  Break the myth/legend into individual premises.  For the acceptibility test check each premise, independent of the others.  A premise is irrelevant if it has nothing to do with the conclusion.  What is missing from the evidence to convince me that the story is true?   Construct a time line.

I plan to use the A*R*G technique to prove or disprove the story of our James Kerr who supposedly fought and became ‘wind broken’ at the Battle of Bull Run.  Stay tuned for more in a later post.

Louise St Denis: French Canadian Research – Online Help and Other Resources.  My Irish Kerrs came from an unknown place in Ireland to the Eastern Townships of Quebec in the 1840s, thus my interest in this topic. A recognized expert from the National Institute for Genealogical Studies and fluent in French, Louise shared many tips for French Canadian researchers, with both catholic and non catholic ancestors.

Genealogy Nugget: Three important resources for Quebec vital records are The TANGUAY Dictionary of births, marriages, deaths and children).  The DROUIN Dictionary (marriages) and the JETTÉ Dictionary (births, marriages, deaths, children).

Genealogy Gems Live Podcast with Lisa Louise Cooke – guests Suzanne Adams of Ancestry.com, Photo Detective Maureen Taylor and Chris Haley.   I always enjoy Lisa’s warm and welcoming interviewing style as she brings us genealogy ‘nuggets’ in each episode.  Listen to this podcast here.

Blogger Summit Part 2 – I missed part one as it conflicted with the French Canadian talk above but made it in time to get into the photos with my fellow geneabloggers and to hear session 2. This session was led by Thomas MacEntee of High-Definition Genealogy.  Participating in the panel were Lisa Louse Cooke of Genealogy Gems,  Schelley Talalay Dardashti of Tracing the Tribe, and Kathryn Doyle of California Ancestors and Craig Manson of GeneaBlogie.

Genealogy Nugget: The ideal length of a good blog post is three paragraphs.

With that in mind I’ll save the rest of this post for tomorrow :)

To be continued….
