Genealogy Goals for 2010

We genealogy and family history types have been challenged to generate Genealogy resolutions for 2010. I am better at setting goals than I am at making and keeping resolutions.  I don’t think I have ever made a resolution I have kept!

Here are my Genealogy Goals for 2010.  (GG…nice alliteration there)

GG#1.  Digitize, Digitize, Digitize – I plan to take one day per month to scan various family tree documents, pictures, postcards etc and enter them into my Family Tree Maker program.  I find it is more efficient to batch task…so one day per month it will be only digitizing and entering.

GG#2.  Blog writing I will write more articles featuring offline local resources for the genealogist.  For example detailed articles on how to use the University and public libraries for genealogy research.  Also an article on the Glenbow archives.   I have written about the Six Calgary Canada Genealogy Resources and using the local LDS Family History Portals.  This generated a lot of traffic for the blog.  There seems to be a need for this type of information and I like helping in this manner.

GG#3.  The KERR Brickwall – note the caps.  This is a major challenge and has been on the books for years.  I’m going to systematically approach this challenge by assessing all of the documentation I currently have, read up on the social history of the day, access all the local sources (libraries, FHC, interlibrary loans etc) and to extensively review records at World Vital Records and Ancestry.com.

I also plan to follow up on the DNA leads for the KERR family (see my post of on Serendipity DNA).  Ultimately I believe it will be DNA that will solve the mystery of where in Ireland our Kerrs came from and subsequently back to Scotland.

If you are a KERR male reading this (or know someone who is a KERR male), please participate in the KERR/CARR DNA project.  Leave a comment below if you need more information.

GG#4.  Genealogy Meetings at the Alberta Family Histories Society and special interest groups.  I enjoy these and plan to attend more in the coming year.

GG#5.  Genealogy Conferences and Roots Travel definitely want to do more of this.  We plan to attend the Arizona Family History Expo January 22,23, 2010 so we are off to a good start.  I am thrilled to be a “Blogger of Honor” and will be blogging and tweeting about the event.

There is still a chance to win two free tickets to the Family History Expo. (entry deadline January 10).  Please consider entering even if you aren’t planning to go as the winning tickets can always be donated.  I welcome all entries and will post them on the blog. This gives you a chance to showcase a genealogical photo or story with a link back to your website or email.

GG#6.  Participate more in the fun Genealogy Carnivals and other online genealogy activities.  (Now that I’m retired, I’m supposed to have more time, right??)

And being as I’m retired I think that is enough GGs for one year….;)

Have a Happy New Year everyone! Wishing you good health, happiness and great genealogical success in 2010!
